Rock On with Great Literature
NewPages Newsletter #152 Featuring 47 Submission Opportunities & Upcoming Events
And just like that, the unseasonably warm weather of Halloween passed by followed by some more typical autumn weather. And, as per usual it seems these days, the rains come during harvest time when they were sorely needed during the summer months. If the ever-changing weather has you sadly down with a bug like I was last week, NewPages has plenty reasons for you to stay indoors with your box of tissues, hot tea with honey, and your laptop.
First off, don’t forget to swing by our Guide to Writing Contests which was recently updated to help fill your submissions calendar for the rest of the year. Next, dive into our comprehensive list of journals with new issues available.
Speaking of new issues of literary magazines, don’t forget to swing by the Magazine Stand where you can discover even more! The inaugural issue of Megacity Review is currently available for pre-order! This fledgling journal “fuses the dynamic energy of Warhol’s pop culture legacy with the visionary brilliance of Lauren Halsey’s Afro-futurism.”
Ahead of their 15th anniversary next year, the Amherst College-based, Whiting Award-winning literary magazine The Common presents Issue 28, featuring a portfolio of contemporary writing by Catalan women in translation. Need even more literary magazine goodness? Come back to the Magazine Stand throughout the week to learn more about the latest issues of Apple Valley Review, AGNI, The Missouri Review, THEMA, and The Lake.
In book news, you can view our entire roundup of new and forthcoming titles received by NewPages during October now! If you need more book updates, our Book Stand features new and forthcoming titles from primarily indie and university presses. Coming tomorrow afternoon, you can discover Christie Waldman’s latest MG/YA fantasy work featuring illustrations by Lane Waldman, The Voice of the Wooden Dragon. In Deweydaire, anthropomorphic dragons rule and play the day away while humans are forced to do all of the work. Princess Meredith must lead others to fight against injustice and allow their voices to be heard.
If you are looking for some book recommendations, our reviewers are here to help you find your next best read. Jami Macarty reviews Lynne Thompson’s Blue on a Blue Palette where Thompson “speaks with candor about the female body, desire, and aging, speaks from ‘anguish’ about male violence against females and police violence against people of color.” Macarty also reviews She Falls Again by Cree poet Rosanna Deerchild. In her third collection, Deerchild devotes attention to “cultural storytelling” focusing on telling the stories of her matrilineal line.
Last, but definitely not least, Kevin Brown tackles Louise Erdrich’s novel The Mighty Red. Set in North Dakota, the novel follows Kismet who is in love with Hugo but chooses to marry another man as well as Kismet’s mother Crystal who works driving truck hauling sugar beets to a plant. “It’s what characters don’t know or willfully ignore that truly matters, though, as Erdrich shows the effects humanity has on the planet, as well as on each other.”
Come back to the NewPages Blog throughout the week for reviews of The Essential Howard Gardner on Education and Lyta Gold’s Dangerous Fictions.
Inspiration
The number of people who must become caretakers to other family members has been steadily rising over the years with the decreasing difficulty to be able to afford skilled nursing facilities among many other reasons. Are you a caretaker? Is someone you know caring for a loved one with a disability or who is elderly and cannot care for themselves anymore who you watch struggle to balance it all?
Can you tell the story of all the mixed feelings coming when your love is also warring with burden and guilt? An ode to what may have been and can never be again when roles are reversed and a child must care for their own parents? Or how about an essay or article diving even deeper into the world of caretaking as you get ready to start your own journey?
