New Submission Opportunities & Great Literature
NewPages Newsletter #109 Featuring 41 Submission Opportunities
With the second week of January comes a lot of fun winter weather: snow, sleet, rain, high winds. If you’re caught in one of these storms, NewPages is here with great reasons to stay indoors and out of the cold and wet. And what better way to brighten someone’s day than to admire some great cover art? Editor Denise Hill is back with three new cover recommendations in her Lit Mag Covers :: Picks of the Week. Enjoy Sharona Franklin’s art gracing the cover of Arc Poetry’s Fall 2023 issue guest edited by Therese Estacion. The Fall/Winter 2024 issue of Salmagundi Magazine features a column on bees, thus the cool cover art featuring bees. Last, but not least, enjoy the photograph “Winter Trees” gracing the cover of Poetry South’s 2023 issue. Don’t forget to enjoy the content between the covers after admiring the art on the outside.
Speaking of literary magazines, don’t forget to stop by the Magazine Stand to learn more about the latest issues from your favorites. The Shore celebrates its 5th Anniversary with Issue 20 just in time for the season of reflection and introspection. These poems offer new ways to see the world accompanied by Susana Alcaraz’s visions of the world through a variety of art mediums. The January 2024 issue of The Lake features work by C. J. Anderson-Wu, Jill Michelle, Sharon Whitehall, and more.
Come back to the Magazine Stand throughout the week to discover fledgling literary magazine 7th-Circle Pyrite and the latest issues from Still Point Arts Quarterly, Superpresent, and Kaleidoscope.
The NewPages Book Stand features new and forthcoming titles primarily from indie and university presses. Emily Jon Tobias’ MONARCH: Stories is due out from Black Lawrence Press in May 2024 and is available to preorder now. An exploration of the human condition through a lens of the damaged, MONARCH’s characters bear traumas with their bodies, and often, they transgress while learning how to love through small acts of kindness. They break in, break down, and ultimately, break open.
Sans. PRESS has released its sixth anthology, Another Name for Darkness. In this book, fifteen writers explore the many shapes that darkness can take, from the monstrous to the stark realities of loss and heartbreak.

Get more recommendations from our reviewers! Kevin Brown reviews Paul Murray’s The Bee Sting which is set primarily in rural Ireland and follows a family of four that is clearly having a difficult time. “That theme of appearance versus reality runs throughout the entire novel, and Murray is not about to let the reader off easy with a tied-up ending that will make it clear how this family fairs. Like all of us, they will continue to struggle, one way or another.”
Come back to the blog to discover more information about Episode 5 of Kaleidoscope’s podcast series as well as to read reviews of This Country by Navied Mahdavian, This Other Eden by Paul Harding, and A Shining by Jon Fosse.
