Call it climate change, global warming, or Mother Nature getting some kicks in, but it’s been a wild ride of ups and downs and it’s only the end of February. With March just around the corner getting ready to purr or roar, don’t forget to check out our Big List of Writing Contests for March deadlines not to miss. Spring break is also coming soon, isn’t it? If you’ll be traveling and forgot to pack a book, shame on you, our Guide to Indie Bookstores in the US & Canada will help you find a local bookshop near you to save the day.
The best way to kick off a Monday is enjoying art, isn’t it? Editor Denise Hill recommends three new covers in her Lit Mag Covers :: Picks of the Week series. Enjoy Travis D. Roberson’s watercolor and oil on paper Feline at Sunset gracing the cover of Issue 38 of Radar Poetry. Discover the work of UK-based illustrator, designer, and animator Alex Dimond on the cover of Fatal Flaw’s December 2023 issue. Last, but definitely not least, enjoy Thao Stovesand’s abstract art on the cover of Qu’s Winter 2024 issue. After admiring the cover art, don’t forget to slide between the covers for even more great work.
Postcard is the brainchild of Editor-in-Chief and Designer David Wojciechowski who was initially interested in making broadsides but fell in love with the smaller, more economical postcard. Learn more about this new publication in our New Lit on the Block Series. Speaking of literary magazines, you can now enjoy the February 2024 issue of online literary magazine Rogue Agent. This issue features poetry and artwork that investigates the question: “What is it like to live in the body?”
Stay tuned to the Magazine Stand this week to discover issue 7.1 of River Heron Review, december 34.2, and bioStories 13.1. As this week is the final week of February, you can catch up on all the journals with new issues in our New & Noted Literary & Alternative Magazine Issues. Did you miss out on the list for January? Get recommendations from our reviewers! Jami Macarty covers Emily Hockaday’s poetry collection In a Body. “These poems remind us that we live precariously with ‘how many batteries / lie below the surface’ and our ‘humanity’s failures.’”
Kevin Brown reviews Absolution by Alice McDermott. This book is technically an epistolary novel even though it does not read like one. It’s an exchange of three long letters between Tricia and Rainey focusing mainly on Rainey’s mother Charlene. “The novel portrays the women, even Charlene, as hemmed in by their gender, exploring their role in a place where they have no choice but to be, much like the soldiers, but for a very different reason.”
Brown also reviews Kiley Reid’s second novel, Come & Get It, which the author has stated centers around money, but is about so much more than the purported subject. Reid also interviewed thirty college students to help create her characters. “Though not a polemic, this novel seems designed to disprove the theory of the rational actor in any situation, economic or otherwise.”
Come back to the blog this week for a review of Kaveh Akbar’s Martyr!
