New Submission Opportunities & Great Literature
NewPages Newsletter Issue 95 Featuring 40 Calls for Submissions and Writing Contests
News from NewPages
Welcome to the first full week of October! Hard to believe our year is almost over with already. While we are in the early throes of autumn here in Michigan, Mother Nature has blessed us with 80s and sunshine to be replaced by rain and cold weather later in the week. If you get a chance and have some beautiful weather, grab up your favorite lit mag or book and take a chance to read out in the sunshine. Or grab your laptop and work on your submission goals. Since it is October, don’t forget to check out our Big List of Writing Contests so you don’t miss out on any end-of-year deadlines.
Last week NewPages posted a roundup of all books and new magazine issues received for the month of September. You can enjoy discovering all the latest issues of the magazines you love and discover new ones on our New & Noted Literary & Alternative Magazine Issues page. Plus enjoy discovering new titles on our New Books Received page. These pages are updated on the last Monday and Wednesday of each month. Interested in having your own journal or book featured? Learn more about sponsored posts here.
On the Magazine Stand, enjoy learning even more about the latest issues of literary magazines, like Still Point Arts Quarterly’s Fall 2023 issue. “It’s the Journey, Not the Destination” is the theme, featuring art and photography, fiction and nonfiction, and poetry. Don’t forget to come back to the Magazine Stand throughout the week to discover more about Kaleidoscope Issue 86 podcast and New England Review Issue 44.3.
In book news, don't forget to check out the Book Stand which highlights new and forthcoming titles primarily from indie and university presses. 18: Jewish Stories Translated from 18 Languages edited by Nora Gold is an anthology offering readers the first collection of translated multilingual Jewish fiction in twenty-five years: a collection of eighteen stories, each translated into English from a different language.
American Roulette, a novel forthcoming from Sunbury Press later this month, takes readers inside a mall where a mass shooting has taken place. It’s a grisly and up-close look at a wholly preventable, if common, occurrence. You can enjoy an interview with two of the authors on the NewPages Blog, too. Matthew Thomas Meade’s stories in Strip Mall are about a surreal future as much as they are about our absurd present.
Come back to our Book Stand throughout the week to learn more about Lori Jakiela’s memoir They Write Your Name on a Grain of Rice: On Cancer, Love, and Living Even So; Emily Grandy’s novel Michikusa House, winner of the Landmark Prize for Fiction; and Dirt Songs, a collection from Ohio Poet Laureate Kari Gunter-Seymour.

Get more recommendations from our reviewers. Kevin Brown tackles Zadie Smith’s latest novel, The Fraud. “The title of Zadie Smith’s latest novel is misleading, as there is no singular fraud in this novel; instead, everybody seems to be a fraud.”
