New Submission Opportunities & Great Literature
NewPages Newsletter #103 Featuring 52 Submission Opportunities
Happy Monday! We hope that you were all able to enjoy time with friends and family over the Thanksgiving holiday. Hopefully you had some time to also relax and recharge. If you’re ready to dive into your reading and submission goals afresh this week, NewPages is here to help you. Don’t forget we do offer a vetted list of writing and book contests arranged by deadline month. Now is a great time to check it out.
If you are looking for books for the literature lovers in your life, don’t forget to check out a local bookstore near you. NewPages is constantly updating our Guide to Indie Bookstores in the US and Canada. Do check it out to find one in your area. Another great gift for the writer in your life? A gift subscription to our newsletter! The end of a month and beginning of a new one always comes with a bevy of new opportunities they won’t want to miss.
Catch up on new issues of literary magazines at the NewPages Magazine Stand. The Fall 2023 (8.2) issue of Collateral is now online for readers to share in the contributions of literary and visual art revealing the impact of military service and violent conflict beyond the combat zone. Contributors include Karen Arnold, James King, Marc Levy, Barbara Krasner, and more. The First Line Fall 2023 issue tasked writers with the line, “As soon as Harriet entered the building, she headed to the seventh floor.” While you read how all these works start the same but take a different path, consider checking out their lines for 2024 for a submission challenge.
The Fiddlehead No. 297 (Autumn 2023) features poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and reviews written by some of the best new and established writers, including Anne Marie Todkill, winner of their 2023 Creative Nonfiction Contest. Comeback to the Magazine Stand throughout the week to discover The Malahat Review Issue 224 and Consequence’s Fall 2023 issue. There are even more great issues that we received but did not have time to feature. Enjoy the November roundup of new issues here. If you missed out on the October roundup, it’s still available here.
Time to bulk up on your reading list with the help of the NewPages Book Stand which features new and forthcoming books primarily from indie and university presses. In Janice Deal’s linked story collection, Strange Attractors: The Ephrem Stories, everyday people navigate the uncertainties of life in the American heartland, seeking order in chaos with a very human mix of resilience and folly. Come back to the Book Stand later in the week to learn more about Sara Hosey’s Dirty Suburbia.
Stay tuned for our roundup of all new and forthcoming books received this month. That will be available on Wednesday. Until then, if you haven’t already, don’t forget to check out October’s roundup of new and forthcoming titles.

Get more recommendations from our reviewers! Kevin Brown reviews Claire Keegan’s So Late in the Day in which “Keegan creates women who want to craft meaningful lives in the world, but the men who interact with them do their best to prevent those lives from coming to fruition.”
Brown also tackles Linda Villarosa’s Under the Skin: The Hidden Toll of Racism on American Lives and on the Health of Our Nation. “Villarosa draws on the history of health and medicine to show the variety of ways the then-legalized and socially accepted racism continues to affect how healthcare professionals today see people of color, especially African Americans.”
