Literary Egg Hunts
NewPages Newsletter #120 Featuring 62 Submission Opportunities & Upcoming Events
It is the final week of a very long and mad month. With meteorological spring arriving with a blast of wintery weather across several states, it has been more than just basketball being a little mad with unexpected upsets. In all the inconsistencies of the world, one thing that remains the same is great literature and literary magazines, like Jewish Fiction .net which is the only English-language journal in print or online devoted to exclusively publishing Jewish fiction. Or Superstition Review, an online literary magazine produced by creative writing and web design students at Arizona State University.
Speaking of literary magazines, celebrate some great cover art with NewPages Editor Denise Hill’s Picks of the Week. First, we have Lauren Bennett’s work, Sails, Scales, and Dreams gracing the cover of Milwaukee’s leading literary journal Cream City Review 47.2. Next you can enjoy poet and artist Debora Greger’s artwork gracing the cover of Birmingham Poetry Review’s Spring 2024 issue. The second issue of Changing Skies is available for free online, and features cover art by Deborah Ajilore, Soiled. Once you are done admiring the outside, don’t forget to give that much consideration to the work on the inside.
The Magazine Stand features the latest issues of literary and alternative magazines. New England Review Issue 45.1 features work by Debra Spark, Rob Colgate, and fresh translations from the Marathi, Old English, and Russian. Plus, you can enjoy cover art by Timothy Cummings. Issue 46 of Bellevue Literary Review features the winners of the 2024 BLR Prize: Shastri Akella (fiction), Misty Kiwak Jacobs (nonfiction), and Amy Rothschild (poetry).
Come back to the Magazine Stand throughout the week to discover Issue 21 of The Shore and the Spring 2024 issue of Willawaw Journal.
In book news, Stephen C. Pollock’s Exits: Selected Poems has been honored with the Gold Medal for poetry in the 2023 Readers’ Favorite International Book Awards and the Silver Medal for poetry in the 2024 Featured Quill Book Awards. If you haven’t already, jump into this collection exploring the beauty and frailty of life, the theme of mortality, and the potential for renewal.

We have also updated our Guide to Indie Bookstores last week to include some recently opened bookstores and ones that will have their grand opening in April. Give it a gander and don’t forget to pay these stores a visit while looking for your next book.
With Easter happening this weekend, how about a fun literary Easter egg hunt idea? Take a copy of your favorite short story or poem, cut it into ribbons and place it along with a piece of candy inside of an empty egg. Then your friends and family can hunt and put together the story or create a new fun one by reading it all out of order. That actually may be a great writing prompt idea right there, too, to help get your creative juices flowing. Put random prompts into eggs and choose one to help you get over a writing block or inspire new work.
